He’s not your silent partner

I was at my piano worshiping with the Lord, and I started singing an older Christian song “You Won’t Relent” by Jesus Culture. The bridge of the song says, “I don’t wanna talk about you like you’re not in the room. I wanna look right at you. I wanna sing right to you.” As I was singing this, the Lord said, “I’m not your silent partner.”

I stopped in my tracks. I started to repent for viewing Him as a silent partner. As someone who does not have any say in my daily life.

Webster’s Dictionary defines silent partner as, “a partner who is known to the public but has no voice in the conduct of a firm’s business.”

Oof. Yeah, I think most of us are guilty of this one. I commune with God and seek after Him, but when it comes to conducting my life and making decisions, there are a lot of times when I don’t give Him a say. I make decisions and act like they are endorsed by God. Sometimes this is because I am so blinded by my own desires and plans that all I hear is “yes” from the Lord when He is really trying to tell me “no”.

We must seek to be in full submission and surrender to the Lord. Having our hands wide open is crucial when making decisions and asking for guidance. We must make sure our hearts are postured correctly to hear clearly from the Lord. When I am trying to make a decision that is hard or emotional for me, I pray that the Lord would give clarity and an answer outside of my emotions or wants. I only want what He wants. Proverbs 3:5-6 is a great verse to fall back on, “Trust in the Lord with all of your heart, lean not on your own understanding. In all of your ways know Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

God was never meant to be a contributor with no voice. He should be the loudest voice we hear. We have a choice to make. When we make God our silent partner, we are saying that we know best. That our opinions and thoughts are higher than His (and they clearly are not—Isaiah 55:8-9). We are making ourselves a god when we choose our ways over His. So what will it be?

“Elijah went before the people and said, ‘How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if baal is God, follow him.” 1 Kings 18:21

Are you choosing to follow God or yourself? Who is your God?

Don’t make God your silent partner. Repent and ask for forgiveness. Seek His face and give Him control of your life and all your decisions. He wants your whole heart and your whole life. Let him be at the steering wheel, making the decisions and showing you what direction to go in. His ways are so much better than your own.
